Instructor Camp 2010

The South Island hosted this year’s National Instructors Camp which attracted a record 60 Instructors from around the country.    Instructors travelled to Christchurch to participate in this annually run weekend for Instructors and up and coming Instructors.  The Union was lucky to secure Carmela Hartnett a 7th Dan Black Belt in Taekwondo. Carmela has won a medal at 3 out of 4 World Poomsae Championships and has every intention to compete again this year.  She ran an excellent Poomsae seminar at the camp and passed on some priceless knowledge to those wanting to compete in Poomsae nationally and Internationally.  Carmela also stayed to enjoy the rest of the presentations during the weekend and we were pleased to hear that she learnt some things herself from the other presentations.   Those that attended the event were treated to an excellent variation of skilled presenters such as; Hanshi Renzie Hanham, 8th Dan Black Belt in Karate who spoke about sports psychology; Dr Bren Dorman, TNZ National Team Doctor, who discussed the dangers of rapid weight loss and the effects of concussion; Dr Liesel Geertsema a specialist in the field of sports medicine who spoke about nutrition; Master Vijay Chhika, 6th Dan Black Belt on some WTF International rule changes, Master Matt Ransom, 6thDan and Master Yorick Neal, 5th Dan with an update from TNZ and the opportunity to provide a wish list. The popular St Johns course was also run and 18 more Instructors now hold a first aid certificate. Thanks must go to the organisers and to the Christchurch Olympic TKD club who assisted with transport, organised the meals and made available their Christchurch dojang.
