Matthew Beach win's Gold at the Korean Open

The NZ Olympic Team has just recently returned from a training and competition trip to Korea in what will be their final travel before leaving for the Olympics. The trip was rounded off with our athletes competing with sucess at the Korean Open. Union member Matthew Beach, who after securing a bye for the 1st round of the event, fought a Canadian who had previously beaten a Korean player. A close 1st round quickly changed pace after a head shot from Matthew and he met the 7 point margin early in the 3rd round. Matthew then fought an Australian in a match that also began very slowly. In the 3rd round, Matthew countered with a massive right leg to the head and gained a standing 8 count. The match ended shortly afterwards when the 7 point margin was met which meant Matt won gold for the heavy weight division. Fellow team mate, Logan Campbell (Alliance) also won Gold with Robyn Cheong losing her match on a golden point. The New Zealand Olympic team now has 4 weeks to put the finishing touches on their preparation before leaving for China. This trip and competition have added great value to their preparation. The Union congratulates Matthew and Logan on their Gold Medal wins.
